Using what you care about as leverage

Children, pets, family, status or reputation turned into pressure points.

What it looks like

The things you would protect become the things that get raised when you resist. Custody, a pet, immigration paperwork, your job, your standing with family or your congregation.

Things people actually hear

  • "Try leaving and see how custody goes."
  • "One phone call and your visa is a problem."
  • "Your family will hear my version first."

Why it works

Coercive-control scholarship describes control as operating through whatever a person cannot afford to lose. That is why children, pets, money, documents and reputation appear so often.

It is effective precisely because the concern is real. Custody, immigration status and a pet's safety are genuine stakes, which makes the pressure hard to dismiss.

Because the specifics matter enormously — jurisdiction, status, who holds what — this is an area where general information is weak and a domestic-violence advocate or attorney is strong.

When it may be something else: two people can raise children, money and family in an argument without it being leverage. The difference is whether these things appear as a consequence attached to your compliance.

One way to respond

"I'm not going to make decisions under threat. If something needs deciding, it gets decided calmly."

Only use a script like this if it's safe to. If pushing back has consequences for you, safety comes first — see Get help.
